As someone who hates fast fashion, Meraki Beach offered me the perfect opportunity to share my passion for fashion and ethical manufacturing. I’ve always wanted to give back to others who are less fortunate than myself, and this was the ideal chance to combine a few of my interests into one project. Today I’m going to share why I founded Meraki Beach and the motivation behind the brand.
A Chance Meeting that Changed Everything
Before creating Meraki Beach, I had been selling clothing for about six years. I’d always wanted to produce and own a clothing line, but it wasn’t until a chance meeting with a colleague who has now become a friend that I really believed it would be possible.
As I’m sure you are aware, manufacturing in India is often an absolute nightmare, with most of the factories in India not working in an ethical manner at all. My dream of owning a clothing line always revolved around doing something ethical, and I couldn’t stand the thought of producing products and a brand as a result of other people’s suffering. This wonderful chance came about at the perfect time and offered me an opportunity to realise my passion while also helping other women. It really was a dream come true, and everything just fell into place at the right time.
A Connection to India
I’ve always been fascinated by India and its people and culture since I was a child. My grandmother was born in Burma, and she used to tell me fascinating stories of the jungle, flying snakes and visiting the gymkhanas every weekend. I was completely mesmerised by the sound of the people, the energy and the fabulous colours! She is one of the biggest inspirations in my life and ignited my passion for travel and exploration at a young age.
After learning more about the way in which women are treated in India while working for many of the world’s top clothing brands, I knew I wanted to find a way to give back to this community that has inspired me so much. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions, I’ve yet to be able to meet my amazing team, but I’m so excited to finally travel to Mumbai when travel restrictions are lifted.
I can’t wait to meet all of my team in person and hear their stories. My aim with Meraki Beach is to empower women and share the story of the women behind my brand. Each of the collections we launch is a tribute to these hardworking women and their lives which are now free from the pain and suffering they experienced in the past. My journey so far with Meraki Beach truly wouldn’t be possible without each and every one of these women.
Meraki Beach is a brand that I am proud to share with the world. As a female-founded company, I strive to empower women every day with my work and show them what is possible for their lives.
