Here at Meraki Beach we are fully focused on manufacturing our collections ethically and we are always looking for ways as a company to be more sustainable and kinder to the environment. This year we have decided to offer our customers and clients the opportunity to buy our collections made out of Modal Vegan Silk.
We don't want to substitute or lose the luxury feel of our garments so chose this wonderful fabric as it feels and looks just a gorgeous as silk, but ethically there are so many positives to using this new fabric.
Modal silk is a wood pulp based cellulosic fibre made from beech trees extract. The cellulose extracted from the beech trees is spinned manually to make it into a beautiful modal silk fabric. It is made from natural materials and is completely biodegradable and considered a more eco-friendly alternative to cotton and other fabrics because beech trees don't require much water to grow and therefore the production process uses about 10-20 times less water.
It is very important for us to use only FSC certified Modal silk. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests. Since its foundation in 1994, FSC has grown to become the world’s most respected and widespread forest certification system. FSC certification ensures that products come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits. FSC Principles and Criteria provide a foundation for all forest management standards globally, including the FSC US National Standard.
FSC's pioneering certification system, which now covers more than 200 million hectares of forest, enables businesses and consumers to choose wood, paper and other forest materials made with materials that support responsible forestry.
Nature-based solutions harness the power of nature to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and also help us adapt to the impacts of climate change. They are win-win solutions that involve protecting, restoring and sustainably managing ecosystems to address society's challenges and promote human well-being.
Forests are probably the most well-known nature-based solution for climate change, but there are many more - including peatlands, mangroves, wetlands, savannahs, coral reefs and other landscapes. FSC-certified forests are a key nature-based solution, providing multiple benefits for climate, nature and society.
